Playing with backgrounds

Happy Thursday! Welcome to another Seize the Birthday challenge.... and this week we are making our own backgrounds!  As always, just a birthday card is required for the challenge and the 'topping' is just an option.

Sometimes I find DIY backgrounds challenging, but recently I learned a new technique from Jenn.  I inked up my glossy craft mat with some Distress Inks, misted it with water and then smushed my watercolour down on it.  Scary the first time I did it but.. wow!  I have never done watercolour anything (shocking I know) so am thrilled to have this new technique.  I also used a stencil, some gel paste, some liquid Distress ink and some glitter to make the stars (see Jenn's canvas tutorial). Hope you like this 'something new' from me.

Be sure to check out the rest of the great designs from the rest of the team on the Seize the Birthday blog.  All the details on how to play along are there too!

Thanks for stopping by.  Hope you have a terrific day and a wonderful weekend.

Travels, friends & a card

Happy Thursday! Before I get to the card for today... a slight diversion.  I have to talk a little bit about a little trip I took recently.  As some of you know, I used to teach card classes for A Muse.  As part of that, I met and got to know an amazing group of women.  While teaching for A Muse is no longer, the friendships I made during that time have lasted.  Well, some of us were lucky enough to get together for Jenn Shurkus' Art Loft Retreat in Providence, RI on the last weekend of March.  Jenn is a former A Muse girl herself and now runs art retreats, teaches and designs (be sure to check our her website - amazing stuff there). I can't describe what an amazing time we had but it reminds me that this hobby has done so much more for me than just give me a creative outlet.  It has given me some truly amazing friends and I am so glad they are still in my life.

Hope everyone is have a fabulous week and spring is starting to arrive where you are (providing you are in the northern hemisphere!)  Happy fall to my southern hemisphere friends.  :)

Happy Thursday and welcome to another Seize the Birthday challenge!  The option/topping this week is 'sentiment as focal point'. Channeled my inner child here and did some hard core paper ripping!  LOL!  Remember the topping is totally optional and the only requirement is birthday.

Must welcome our newest team member Anika Lerche!  Thrilled to have her on the team. She will be officially joining us on March 12th! Be sure to check out the blog for details and the other fabulous team creations!

Lovely...

This week at Seize the Birthday we are celebrating *love* and have a theme of hearts and/or arrows.  Remember, you are always free to do any birthday card... the themes are just an *option*.  I have a hard time with hearts sometimes but borrowed a friends' die and came up with this (I give all the credit for this idea to her!).

There are different strips of patterned paper underneath each column of hearts... trying to show it here.

Hope you have a chance to play along with Seize the Birthday this week!  Be sure to give some love to the rest of the design when you check out all of the details over at the blog.

Thanks for stopping by and have a great week!  Always appreciate the lovely comments.
Take care,

Happy Thursday!  Hard to believe it is already a month in to 2015?  What?  I am already behind on school work... but I did have a fabulous crafty retreat with my girls this weekend though.  So fabulous!  Actually got some scrapbooking done and a bunch of cards made.  So much crafty fun and lots of laughs.  :)

It it time for another Seize the Birthday challenge and is free and clear this week (no option/topping). Just whipped up a quick and clean card with some new paper I received from a friend.

The fabulous & amazing & sweet Amy Tsuruta (I know, I've met her) is hosting a Holiday Coffee Lovers Blog Hop.  I haven't been crafting a lot so any excuse to make another card and play along with a fun blog hop is fabulous! (Oh and I do love my coffee!)

The card I made is not really holiday related... but I'm not making any holiday cards (gasp, I know, shocking - grad school is my excuse). However, I did need to make a little card to go along with a little "just because" gift I sent to my good friend Emily last week.

So Amy has some sponsors for the hop so be sure to check out all the details on her blog.  Everyone that links up with newly created holiday coffee/or other favorite hot holiday drink project is eligible for free stuff from the sponsors.  Check out the fabulous list sponsors and their freebie stuff! :)

Happy day

Happy Thursday and happy December!  WHAAA? How did it get to be December?  Oh wait, my whole year has been insanely busy... that's how.  :D

It's time for another Seize the Birthday challenge.  It is "anything" goes as always and this week it is completely open!  No options/toppings.  So have at it! Can't wait to see what you come up with. This is what I came up with. I love paper piecing... so much easier than colouring.  ;)

I know you are likely busy making holiday cards (I am opting out of that again this year) but hope you have a chance to play along with us this week.  All the details and the fabulous design team creations can be found on the blog

Paper Crafts & Scrapbooking Magazine Special Thanks! Blog Hop

Wow... not really sure what to say here today.  Paper Crafts Magazine has been such force in the paper crafting world and I am sad that it will soon be no longer.  However, I believe we should celebrate the fabulous entity and the amazing people that are Paper Crafts Magazine!

First off... you should have arrived here from Brenda Weaver's blog... secondly, here is the card I created.  My mojo is a little rusty these days as I haven't been crafting due to grad school so hope you like it! (In retrospect - I should have done a martini card - would have been far more appropriate!  LOL).

I going to try to keep this short and sweet but I do want to talk about some of the highlights of my relationship with Paper Crafts Magazine:

  • The relationship really started when I won World Card Making Day in the fall of 2010.  Can't tell you how giddy I was. Here's the card.
  • Getting chosen Moxie Fabber of the Week in the spring of 2011 was pretty fabulous too.
  • Going to CHA in January of 2013 was so amazing as I got to meet the fabulous Paper Crafts ladies, the Go-To Girls as well so many other amazing crafters
  • Just about fell off the couch when I got the email I was going to be a cover girl in July 2013.  Pretty freakin' cool.

I have to say, the best thing about this magazine, for me, is the relationships and amazing friendships it has facilitated and the opportunities it created for me.  I am humbled and honoured and I thank all of you soooo much for everything you done.  Your genuine passion and enthusiasm for the craft always shone through!

Here's a picture of Susan R. Opel, Cath Evaldson and me at CHA 2013. Was pretty thrilled to meet these two!

Bethany has created a fabulous video... check it out!  Also, a big thanks to Taheerah for organizing the hop!  Thanks for all of your hard work!

Now that you are done reading my ramblings... head off to see what Kelly Griglione created!

Thanks for stopping by.  Big hugs to all the fabulous ladies at Paper Crafts Magazine - we love you and you'll be missed! xoxo

Lovely leaves

Happy Thursday!  Hope you are staying warm wherever you are in the world... seems winter has arrived early in some places here in North America.  It is cool here on the West Coast but no snow. :) I have a short reprieve from school work right now so am enjoying some down time (which equals a busy social schedule - catching up with friends that I have barely seen since the summer!)

It is time for another Seize the Birthday challenge.  First of all, I would like to bid a fond farewell to Susie Wittwer - November 6th was her last challenge as a member of our team.  Always loved her beautiful creations.  Secondly, I would like to welcome Hannelie Bester to the team - her creations are beautiful.  Can't wait to see what she comes up with!

The option/topping this week is "leaves".  I went with an autumn theme - pretty clean and simple.

Remember, you don't have to use the option... any birthday card is fine!  Be sure to check out the blog for all the details and for all the fabulous design team creations.

Thanks so much for stopping by and have a great week!  Hope you have a chance to play along.

I'm Back!

Hi!  Apologies! I have been missing for a while.  After being away for work, I was home for 2 weeks before starting my 3 week residency for my Masters.  Life has been a little hectic!  Will be starting my thesis soon so it is about to get more chaotic!  No rest for the wicked.

Welcome to another Seize the Birthday challenge!  As always, it is 'anything goes' and this week's topping/option is 'Monochromatic Orange'.  I have not been at my craft table forever so was surprised I had any inspiration at all.  The thing that surprised me most is that the cleaning fairies didn't come and clean off my craft table while I was MIA.  Hee hee....

Hope you can play along!  Be sure to check the blog for all the details and to check out the fabulous creations by the rest of the team.

Thanks so much for stopping by and have a wonderful week.
